SCHIZOPHRENIA SUPERIMPOSED ON MENTAL RETARDATION

Abstract
The relationship between schizophrenia and mental retardation has been described from the very beginning of psychiatry. Despite the excel-lent early descriptions of schizophrenia in the mentally retarded, the condition was not widely discussed in psychiatric literature until the last two decades.
An evaluation of the literature covering schizophrenia reveals few studies regarding mentally retarded individuals who also display the signs and symptoms of this psychiatric disorder.
It is difficult to elucidate the point of differentiating schizophrenia superimposed on mental retardation from schizophrenia because the diagnostic clarity did not emerge unil the last two decades.
We have experienced a case of schizophrenia superimposed on mental retardation and treated with carbamazepine and haloperidol, and thus we report it with a brief review of literature.
